The filling changes a bean bag’s feel, weight and maintenance needs. Lazy Beanz covers are supplied unfilled, which lets Australian customers source bulky filling locally and adjust firmness to suit.
EPS beads
Expanded polystyrene beads are lightweight and easy to redistribute. They are the filling type used in our product recommendations. Beads compress with use, so the bean bag may need occasional topping up.
Foam pieces
Foam can feel denser and heavier than EPS. It may be harder to move, can take longer to settle and is not necessarily suitable for every liner or product shape. Check compatibility before use.
Fibre and alternative fills
Fibre, natural materials and recycled alternatives vary widely in weight, drying behaviour, support and durability. Do not assume an alternative will perform like EPS; ask us before changing the specified filling type.
How much bean bag filling do I need?
Start with the recommended volume for your bean bag or ottoman, and add EPS beads gradually until the seat feels right. These are approximate starting amounts for Lazy Beanz products:
- Adult outdoor bean bag: 400–450 litres
- Kids’ outdoor bean bag: 150–200 litres
- Large round ottoman: 300–350 litres
- Small round or square ottoman: 90–100 litres
Overfilling can place extra load on seams and zips. Read our bean bag filling guide for step-by-step instructions and important safety guidance.
Safety
Bean bag filling can present choking and suffocation hazards. Keep beads and refill packs away from children, use the child-resistant filling closure correctly, inspect the cover and liner for damage, and never let a child climb inside. A bean bag is not a safe sleeping surface for an infant under 12 months.
